Neck Pain

What is neck pain?

Most causes of neck pain are musculoskeletal in nature and are related to posture. Muscle strains and imbalance, arthritis, disc and ligament damage are four of the more common causes of neck pain. Although neck pain is often mechanical in nature, it is important to realize that such pain can also be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Discuss concerns with a healthcare provider especially if you are experiencing severe pain, weakness/loss of strength in your arms or legs, any changes in bowel or bladder function, high fever or throbbing/tearing head and neck pain. Although it is important to recognize critical symptoms and treat them accordingly, most cases of neck pain are not serious and respond well to non-invasive treatments.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

Neck pain is diagnosed through physical examination which includes region specific orthopedic and neurological tests. In some cases, special studies such as MRI, CAT scan, X-ray or blood work may be ordered.

What are the options for treating neck pain?

Effectively treating neck pain often requires a multimodal approach. When at all possible find a treatment plan that is minimally invasive without drugs or surgery. More invasive options should be entertained only after conservative methods fail to produce the desired result. Our office offers evidence-based treatment plans that consist of spinal manipulation, mobilization, myofascial release, stretching and strengthening exercises, and physiotherapy modalities. Although not performed in the office, acupuncture may be another minimally invasive yet effective strategy for managing neck pain. Other options (not offered in our office) include medication, steroid injections and surgery. Research your options carefully and discuss them with one of the chiropractors at LVC or your healthcare provider before making a decision.
